Down with Thatcher

Compared to reports by The Independent, does anyone else feel that the BBC report is rather pro-China? Or perhaps it's neutral and the Indie article is so anti-China that the BBC just seem to not be neutral. Either way, it's interesting to see two Western outlets take such different approaches to the same story.

I think the BBC article isn't so much pro-China as so studiously neutral that it fails to convey the thrust of the story in any meaningful way. It's barely journalism, it's just a list of facts! The Indie seems kind of crowing to me in this one, but that's to be expected because of their stance on Beijing 2008 etc etc. They're not under the same pressure as the BBC (which has a hand in most of the TV in China, actually, via BBC Broadcast as was) to be neutral about this topic. Mind you, Newsnight did a very OMG CHINESE SECRET POLICE WERE PRETENDING TO BE OLYMPICS OFFICIALS, LOOK AT THEM SHOVING KONNIE HUQ OMG OMG story the other night, which had a bit of the Daily Mail editorials about it.

Seems odd that the BBC seems to omit the real issues behind the protest, and instead merely seems to be reporting on the fact that people have protested.

I think the BBC article appears neutral due to its omission of the core issues, rather like the way the catholic church was neutral with regard to years of kiddy-fiddling by firmly attaching their hands to their ears and speaking in tounges.

I'm just hoping that the methods used by the protesters do not end up overshadowing the issues they intend to highlight. I'm sure China, and all others looking to make money out of China, are hoping this is what happens.
